Am I paying too much?

Many factors determine how much car insurance costs. Gender, age, marital status, education level, geographical location, number of years driving, credit score, profession, driving record and vehicle type all affect your costs. To find the average price for you, make a list of all factors then shop around for the best quotes.

How do I choose a provider?

A good insurance company should be easy to communicate with, have a simple system for tracking claims and behave like they are happy to help you. You want to be comfortable with the price, the coverage AND the company.

How much coverage do I need?

Check with The Department of Motor Vehicles to find out the minimum coverage required by law in your state. Then examine whether or not to add more coverage based on your vehicle and your financial situation.

What are the different kinds of coverage?

Liability insurance covers damages to the other car, but not your car, in an accident that is your fault.

Collision insurance covers the costs of repair to your car in an accident that is your fault.

Comprehensive insurance covers some or all costs if your car is stolen, vandalized or damaged in a non-traffic accident such as hitting a deer.

Each additional level of coverage comes with an increased price. An old car with no loan on it is probably fine with Liability. Add Collision and Comprehensive insurance to a new car that might be stolen, is expensive to repair or has a loan attached.

What will raise my premiums?

Premiums go up for 5 years after an accident, which is why so many drivers do not report minor fender-benders to their insurance company. Driving violations, moving to a more populated area or an increased commute also raise rates. Ask your insurance agent what raises rates when getting quotes.
